Telecom operator ‘denies any such speculation’ Telecom operator Vodafone Idea is in advance stages of processing order for network capacity expansion in six circles through Chinese telecom gear makers, according to industry sources aware of the development.
The order will be only for expansion of existing telecom network capacity where the contract was already awarded to the Chinese vendors, according to the sources.
“Vodafone Idea is planning network expansion in six circles where networks are getting heavy traffic. The company is planning to hand over expansion orders to its existing Chinese vendor in those circles,” one of the sources said.

Operator to use only ‘trusted products’ in network with ‘designated authority’ nod
The government on Wednesday amended the unified licence for procurement of telecom equipment. According to the amendments to come into effect from June 15, the licensee (operator) will only use ‘trusted products’ in its network and seek permission from ‘designated authority’ for upgrading the existing network.
The designated authority for this purpose will be the National Cyber Security Coordinator and, in this regard, the licensee will have to provide any information as and when sought by the designated authority, it said.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is expected to come out with amendments to Telecom License norms for procuring equipment within this week. But, whether Chinese companies like Huawei or ZTE will be allowed to participate or not in the projects as part of its implementation, especially after the recently acquired spectrum by telecom service providers
Synopsis DoT is almost ready to amend licence conditions to incorporate guidelines NSD (national security directive). It should be done in the coming week, an official source said.

The government is likely to amend the telecom licence norms this month to incorporate the guidelines of national security directive on telecommunication sector that will help in controlling installation of network equipment from China and other non-friendly countries. Under the provisions of this directive, the government will declare a list of trusted sources and trusted products for installation in the country s telecom network.
