Lane Closures Announced For Downtown Morganton This Week

One lane of East Union Street, South Sterling Street, and North Green Street in Morganton will be closed starting today (May 3) through Friday (May 7) as contractors work to complete work on traffic islands surrounding the Courthouse Square. The lanes that touch the Courthouse Square will be closed as contractors complete this work.
City crews will be conducting traffic control while contractors complete work on the islands at the corners of East Union Street and North Green Street, and East Union Street and South Sterling Street. This is a continuation of the work on the traffic islands around the Courthouse Square that began Monday, April 26.

SALEM Barbara Joan “Bobbi Joe” Christopher, 78, died Monday, Jan. 25, 2021 at Salem Regional Medical Center. She was born Dec. 10, 1942 in Baltimore, Md., daughter of the late Donald and Barthelia (Bartelson) Barnes.
Barbara graduated from Greene Dreher Sterling High School in 1960. Barbara was primarily a homemaker most of her life. She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening where she turned their property into a gardener’s dream hosting garden club tours. Other interests included crafting dried flower arrangements, quilting, and braiding rugs. She also enjoyed spending time with friends and family.
Survivors include her husband, John Christopher of Salem, whom she married May 13, 1961; brother, Donald (Yvonne) Barnes Jr. of Myrtle Beach; son, Jeffrey (Jennifer) Christopher of Salem; grandsons, Hunter Christopher of Salem and Cameron Christopher of Salem; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
