NorthJersey.com Months after the coronavirus surged through the state s prison population, county jails in North Jersey are off to a slow start inoculating thousands of inmates and immigration detainees as supplies of the vaccine remain limited.  Officials in Bergen, Passaic and Morris counties this week said they re still in the planning stages of inoculations. The Essex and Hudson county jails have administered shots to eligible members of their populations, though so far they have reached only a fraction of their inmates and staffs. We have been very proactive, and we think it s important,  Phil Alagia, the chief of staff for Essex County Executive Joseph DiVencenzo, said last week. It keeps our officers safe, and the people that get released ultimately go back to the community.

New Jersey is now offering voluntary COVID-19 vaccinations to corrections officers and inmates in all state prisons, but questions remain about whether there will be enough participation to keep workers and prisoners safe as the virus continues to spread. The state s vaccination effort  already plagued by a confusing public rollout and not enough supply takes on an added sense of urgency inside prisons, where tight spaces and a high frequency of chronic medical conditions make staff and inmates more vulnerable to the virus.  When COVID crept into Garden State prisons in the first wave of the virus s surge last spring, the state tallied a higher death rate than any other state.

Enter your number to get our free mobile app The Florida Highway Patrol say Zachary Thomas Latham, 18, was arrested after the a motorist waved down a trooper in Fort Myers saying he was a victim of an assault. The motorist claimed another driver confronted him and brandished a firearm at him on the highway. According to the Fort Myers News-Press, when troopers pulled over Latham s Nissan Infinity last Saturday, they found a black, airsoft BB gun that resembles to an AK-47. Latham was also charged with a second count of aggravated assault for attempting to intentionally ram the victim’s vehicle.
