Community News – Southern Maine Community College kicks off 75th anniversary Share Southern Maine Community College kicked off its 75th anniversary celebration April 30 with on-campus planting ceremonies to honor its legacy of transforming people and communities through education and training. Small groups of students, faculty members, administrators, alumni and community partners planted flowering shrubs and trees in simultaneous ceremonies at SMCC’s South Portland campus and Midcoast campus in Brunswick. Attending the South Portland campus planting ceremony are, from left, Southern Maine Community College professor Brian Tarbox, SMCC Foundation donor Eleanor Redmond, SMCC Foundation board member and donor John Boyne, former longtime SMCC professor David Pratt, Maine Community College System President David Daigler, SMCC student Sarah Metcalf, SMCC student Natalie Potter and SMCC professor Norma Willis.

Volunteers clean up South Portland at Earth Month event The South Portland Land Trust has been hosting an Earth Day Cleanup event for almost 30 years, and this year planned Earth Day events for the entire month of April. Author: Jake Richards Updated: 8:01 PM EDT April 24, 2021 SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine In South Portland Saturday, volunteers took part in a city-wide clean-up event to celebrate this year’s Earth Month. This initiative is meant to encourage people to take care of their community beyond Earth Day.  The South Portland Land Trust (SPLT) has been hosting an Earth Day cleanup event for almost 30 years. Now, working with the South Portland Parks, Recreation, and Waterfront Department this year it has organized events throughout the month of April. SPLT president Richard Rottkov says this is great for families that want to get outside and give back to their community.
