Critics say a water bill that would more than double the number of aquifer storage and recovery wells in the Sunshine State is more about water supply for farming and development than storage.
Senate Bill 94, or Water Storage North of Lake Okeechobee, was proposed by Sen. Jason Brodeur (R-Lake Mary), who represents Volusia and part of Seminole counties.
The bill analysis says the technology offers a way to store large volumes of water beneath a relatively small footprint.
Environmental groups say they re a waste of time and money and could divert funds that could otherwise be spent on Everglades restoration infrastructure.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - At least 20 Florida panthers have died in 2020, a toll that appears to be on track to finish lower than in previous years.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said that almost all of the panther deaths were caused by people. One panther was, however, killed by another panther.
Another was hit by a train and someone mutilated yet another panther and left its remains on a roadside near Immokalee.
Every other panther death this year was caused by cars, wildlife officials said.
In this year’s installment of its annual Highway Boondoggles report, U.S. PIRG Education Fund and Frontier Group warn of billions of dollars in proposed spending on unnecessary highway projects that would divide our communities, deprive transit of scarce funds, and pollute our air and water. Below is the sixth of seven installments detailing these harmful projects.

On May 17, 2019, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation kickstarting what would be one of the most expensive, damaging and wasteful highway-building sprees in the country. The bill provided funding and set in motion plans for building three separate highways, totaling approximate 330 miles, that are already draining the state budget and could destroy large swaths of natural areas and threaten the survival of the endangered Florida panther.
