Organised by South East Dance in collaboration with a community steering group, Our City Dances 2021 will take place online and outdoors from Monday, July 19-Saturday, July 24 – the last one before they open their new home for dance, The Dance Space next year.
Beginners breaking workshops, an online disco party and an invitation to join Brighton & Hove-seafront regular Lya, aka BLK Diamond Dance to “dance like everybody’s watching” are all part of the line-up at this year’s free celebration of all things dance. This year’s event will cover a wide range of dance types for a wide range of ages with events including Varnam Workshop, Beginners Guide to Breaking, Walking Stories, All These Things We Can Make and Our City’s Dance Party.

South East Dance staff and a member of their community steering group gathered at The Dance Space to strike a pose on the building’s most iconic feature – its newly completed external spiral staircase.
The Dance Space is Brighton & Hove’s new home for dance opening in spring 2022, a place that its creators –arts charity South East Dance – hope will become the beating heart of all things dance in the city.
The £130 million project and has been carried out by regeneration specialist U + I. It says the project will create 400 jobs and could bring in £200 million into the local economy in the next ten years. The homes are part of the Circus Street development in Brighton and will add to the city’s skyline due to their towering height. All the accommodation at Circus Street is designed to be highly energy efficient.
Developer U I are behind the Circus Street scheme Rob Sloper, development director at U+I, sees the completion is a significant moment for the city. He said: “Completing the new homes at Circus Street is an important step as part of the transformation of this strategically important site as we look forward to the opening of the new office and dance space later this year.”
