JASON SHELTON: Explore Tupelo's role in Black history

February is Black History Month, and I encourage you and your family to explore Tupelo’s role in this important part of our nation’s history. There are seven markers on the Civil Rights and African-American Heritage Trail throughout Tupelo which help tell the story. F.W. Woolworth | 131 West Main Street Located in Downtown Tupelo next to Reed’s GumTree Bookstore, the F.W. Woolworth Company was once a local lunch counter and protest commonplace. Once the Civil Rights Act passed in 1964, Tupelo’s Woolworth store announced its plan to “serve all its customers in all of its stores on a desegregated basis.”

MCTS Bus Shelters get design makeover to celebrate Historic Highway 41 route

Posted by Correspondent | Jan 25, 2021 | Curated Three Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) bus shelters along S. 27th Street in Milwaukee have received a creative makeover that helps beautify the neighborhood while also celebrating the business corridor’s rich history. The shelters at 27th and Oklahoma Avenue and 27th and Ohio Avenue now feature custom-made metal panels with die-cut U.S. Route 41 (Historic Highway 41) logos and messaging. The sturdy paneling, which is covered in a graffiti-resistant coating, replaces standard glass and plexiglass, which can easily become weathered, scratched, or broken. The project was spearheaded by the South 27th Street Business District Association, Milwaukee County Supervisor Jason Haas, Milwaukee Alderman Mark Borkowski, and Milwaukee Alderman Scott Spiker.

San Francisco, Oakland neighborhoods struggle with pharmacy deserts

I was in a coma for three months, I was almost dead. Berry, who has diabetes, relies on a Walgreens miles away to get his weekly medication. He lives near Oakland s East 14th Street Business District, an area also considered a pharmacy desert. We don t have pharmacies in this district, said Oakland City Councilwoman Treva Reid. It s a huge disparity for us. According to Cheryl Wisseh, a health scientist at UC Irvine s School of Pharmacy, It s a desert based on the fact, it s greater than one mile or more from a neighborhood. Based on the population in Berry s zip code, it should have 4.6 retail pharmacies per 10,000 people when compared to the county s zip code average of 1.3 pharmacies.
