THE collapse of the 12-storey beachfront condominium building in Miami, Florida on June 24, killing at least nine people and leaving 100 people still missing as of Sunday, should raise concern over the safety of buildings in our own country.

The Uniform Building By-Laws (UBBL) 1984 enacted under the Street Drainage and Building Act 1974 stipulates that all new buildings require submission of plans for approval prior to construction. The plans must be submitted by a principal submitting person (PSP) such as a professional architect or professional engineer.

Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin
KUALA LUMPUR: Enforcement of the Workers Minimum Standards of Housing and Amenities Act (Amendment) is expected to help curb the spread of diseases, says Zuraida Kamaruddin.
The Housing and Local Government Minister added that this is also in line with the International Labor Organization (ILO) Workers Housing Recommendation 1961. Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, a number of construction site clusters were detected. This shows that construction workers are a high risk group for Covid-19 infection, especially foreign workers, ” she said.
Zuraida added that the risk of spreading the virus is serious, especially taking the dense living conditions and low level of cleanliness at such premises into account.
