With COVID-19 restrictions easing around the country, Pride organizers share how they re brought back Pride in 2021.
In late February 2020, Noah Gonzalez, a vice president on the board of Los Angeles Pride, was watching COVID-19 cases begin to escalate in California and had a portentous phone call with one of his team members. “I remember jokingly saying, ‘What if we have to cancel Pride?’” he recalls. “And then suddenly it became this thing where it was like, ‘Oh, we actually need to start talking about this seriously. ”

Event producer Dreambrite introduced Pride in the Park Chicago, a one-day music festival, in 2019. The event was canceled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, but returns in 2021 as a two-day event with limited capacity. To say we are excited is an understatement, said Dusty Carpenter, President and lead organizer of Pride in the Park Chicago. “We have legendary artists – with 12 Grammys combined – diverse Allies and Queer icons that are going to simply bring the house down.”

“This is not a traditional year,” parade coordinator Tim Frye told GoPride.com. “We need to ensure distance from COVID-19 and give enough time for recovery.”
As first reported by GoPride.com, PRIDEChicago applied for a parade permit on March 17 signaling hope for a return in 2021. The application lists the event date as Sunday, June 27. However, Frye said that date is “highly unlikely” as he awaits approval from the City of Chicago.
