Last spring, Sleepy Eye’s newly created high school trap shooting team was able to compete in a shortened season. This spring the athletes have had a regular season, with a state tournament to follow next month.
Officially called the Minnesota State High School Clay Target League, trap shooting is categorized as an “activity” by the Minnesota State High School League. Teams have local sponsors the Sleepy Eye Sportsmen’s Club for the local team which is also under the guidance of Sleepy Eye High School.
The Sleepy Eye team had 38 students participate this season 12 girls and 26 boys. Team members are students from both Sleepy Eye Public and St. Mary’s High Schools.

SLEEPY EYE Edward Lund of Franklin cut an ice fishing hole with his power auger on Sleepy Eye Lake Sunday as the Sleepy Eye Sportsmen’s Club 39th Annual Fishing Derby took place with restrictions.
“I fish any chance I can get. It’s my first time fishing in this tournament, “ Lund said. He brought along a friend Levi Kerkhoff of Morgan, who also fished.

The COVID-19 pandemic loomed over whether a fishing contest could be held this winter, but now plans are settled for the Sleepy Eye Sportsmen’s Club 39th Annual Fishing Derby on Sleepy Eye Lake Sunday, Feb. 7. The Minnesota DNR recently informed the club that the contest was a go with a Covid Preparedness Plan required.
Club member Lynn Krenz said they want to stress to everyone who plans to come to the lake for the fishing contest, that the Covid regulations adopted must be followed. These are what we’ve all come to understand wear a mask and maintain social distance from those not in your household.
