Native trees and plants By Kathi Mecham Planting native species is gaining in popularity and I often receive questions inquiring about the best native trees to plant and what are the best native plants to encourage pollinators. While this is a broad topic, there are some general ways to get started. “Right plant, right place,” is a phrase used in the horticulture world and is important when deciding what and where to plant. To help with this, look at the space you have, consider the needs of the tree and how the trees will be used. Will they be used as a windbreak, or for erosion control? Maybe ornamental beauty and shade are needed. Or the goal is providing food and cover for wildlife. Whatever the reason, there are some primary considerations.

Clarksville to take part in Plant a Tree for Tennessee

Clarksville Now CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Clarksville residents can pick up a bare-root seedling tree at Edith Pettus Park on April 24 as part of the Tennessee Environmental Council’s ‘Plant a Tree for Tennessee’ program. Seedlings will be available for a $1.99 donation, and can be reserved online through Green Interchange. There are 12 species of tree available, including Northern Red Oak, Redbud, Tulip Poplar and Witch Hazel. The event is meant to build on the success of Clarksville’s Arbor Day celebration and TN Tree Day initiatives, according Parks and Rec spokesman Ryan Sample. City Forester Katherine Killebrew said in a press release that planting trees in Clarksville is beneficial to the city as a whole.

Local Volunteers To Take Part In “Plant A Tree For Tennessee” Next Saturday Saturday, April 17, 2021 Local volunteers will take part in “Plant a Tree for Tennessee”  next Saturday. Tina Harvey Crawford said a group of volunteers will be Enterprise South Nature Park from 9 a.m. to noon distributing trees to those who have pre-ordered trees.   She said they expect at least 1,000 trees - all natives. Ms. Crawford has started a non-profit - Partners of the Park - focused on supplementing Hamilton County Parks and Recreation. So far the group has created a Level 1 Arboretum with lots of help from Gene Hyde, Tom Stebbins and a couple Master Gardeners at ESNP and built and maintained mountain bike trails there.

“Plant A Tree For Tennessee” Project Announced For Earth Week Thursday, April 15, 2021 Green Interchange is offering Tennesseans an opportunity to plant tree seedlings in their yard and community during their “Plant a Tree for Tennessee” event on April 24. Participants who’d like to plant trees may reserve them by April 18, then pick up their tree seedlings on April 24 at one of thirteen designated sites operated by volunteers.   Pickup locations are primarily in Middle Tennessee and include: Ashland City, Chattanooga, Clarksville, Cookeville, Cunningham, Dandridge, Gallatin, Gatlinburg, La Grange, La Vergne, Lebanon and two sites in Nashville. Trees must be reserved in advance; the sites will not receive extra trees.
