DHAKA, Dec 16, 2020 (BSS) – The country today celebrated the 50th Victory Day recalling moments that had marked emergence of Dhaka as the free capital of independent Bangladesh with occupation Pakistani troops’ unconditional surrender.
The ceremonial 31 gun salutes heralded the day as troops fired artillery shots from the National Parade Square while President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid rich tributes to Liberation War Martyrs.
Military secretaries to the President and the Premier placed wreaths on their behalf at the National Memorial at suburban Savar in the early morning ceremony while the COVID 19 prevented their physical presence at the scene.

The nation observes Martyred Intellectuals Day today paying homage to the intellectuals who were killed by the Pakistani occupation forces and their collaborators at the fag end of the country’s Liberation War in 1971.
Sensing an imminent defeat in the war, the Pakistani forces and their local aides designed to annihilate the intelligentsia to cripple the emerging nation.
On this day in 1971, Pakistani army with the help of their accomplices picked up educationists, litterateurs, journalists, physicians and cultural activists from their houses, took them blindfolded to the killing grounds and staged one of the history’s worst pogroms.
