BURNSVILLE, North Carolina (WLOS) The head of Yancey County Schools said the 12-year-old charged with first-degree murder in the death of his father was not a problem student.
Superintendent Kathy Amos said the boy, a sixth-grader at Cane River Middle School, was a good student without any discipline problems.
“No issues,” Amos said. “He was a great kid.”
Amos learned the student had been charged with shooting and killing his 37-year-old father, Vernal Kilburn, when Chief Deputy Shane Hilliard called her Monday night.
“It is very hard when you’re dealing with something that’s so very hard to understand,” Amos said.

PRICE CREEK, N.C. (WYFF) - A young boy is in custody after his father was found dead in Yancey County, according to Chief Deputy Shane Hilliard with the Yancey County Sheriff’s Office.
Hilliard said Vernal Kilburn, 37, was found dead Monday night in his home on Banks Creek Road, just outside of Burnsville.
Hilliard said Kilburn was found after a 911 call.

BURNSVILLE, N.C. (AP) A 12-year-old in North Carolina has been charged with first-degree murder in his father s killing, according to authorities.
The child is accused of fatally shooting his 37-year-old father Monday night at the trailer they lived in near Burnsville, Yancey County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Shane Hilliard told news outlets.
The victim was identified as Vernal Kilburn. Investigators said they recovered a rifle in the trailer where the family lived.
The juvenile, who was not named because he is underage, was taken to a juvenile justice facility, Hilliard said.
