CHR announces arrival of manatees for new fundraiser

Fifteen manatee sculptures, transformed into works of color and beauty by local artists, have been placed across the city of Sanibel as part of the Community Housing and Resources’ Manatee Madness fundraiser. The inspiration began as an idea that CHR Executive Director Melissa Rice had been contemplating for years based on the painted “cow parades.” In this case, sea cows.
In addition to the manatees that will live in a particular location for the next three and a half months, there is a smaller version, Baby Manatee, that will travel to restaurants and businesses around the islands as part of CHR’s Give Back Wednesday events.

On Dec. 10, the Captiva Island Historical Society commemorated the 105-year history of Captiva’s iconic The Island Store, as part of the Bailey family reopening ceremony.
CIHS Board President Tom Libonate opened the ceremony with remarks featuring highlights of the various roles the building has played in the island’s colorful history since it first appeared on the county tax role in 1915.
“Starting as Mrs. Miller’s boarding house, the building has been a beauty parlor, a dormitory for younger classmen of the Snyder School for Boys, a general store, a restaurant, hurricane shelter, architect’s office, polling precinct and rumored at one point to even feature a brothel,” he said.

Well, first of all Merry Christmas to all my readers. Second if you are in ‘last minute’ mode, the Island Store is open on Christmas Eve until 2 p.m. and closed Christmas Day. On New Year’s Eve the store will be open all day, better to buy your spirits, but closed New Year’s Day.
On Christmas Eve, instead of the gathering at All Saints by-the-Sea, a worship service filmed this fall at the chapel will be available for viewing at allsaintssouthport.org, beginning at the usual time 10 p.m. The film of the service will be archived so that you can also view it later. You can also attend an in-person, candlelight worship service at the Southport United Methodist Church beginning at 4
