San Diego biotech Heron Therapeutics received approval from the Food and Drug Administration on Thursday for a drug that dulls post-surgical pain.
The treatment, known as Zynrelef, tamps down inflammation and pain signals in the area where a surgeon has made a cut. Clinical trials show the drug reduces the need for powerful and potentially addictive opioids.
It’s Heron’s third approved product though the company first had to go through years
of back-and-forth with the FDA. With those discussions now resolved, CEO Barry Quart says Zynrelef is poised to help millions of surgical patients each year.
“We think that this is really an opportunity to completely change how pain management is done,” Quart said. “It’s also an opportunity to dramatically reduce the amount of opiates that go home with (patients).”

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. â Graduates from Pasco-Hernando State College got their diplomas Thursday in a different way.
The school billed it as a âcar-mencementâ ceremony.
PHSC hasnât had any in-person graduation ceremonies in the last year.
But this was a drive-through ceremony, where graduates hoped out of their cars, got their diplomas from PHSC President Timothy Beard, and then smiled for a few pictures.
About 150 grads took part at the West campus in New Port Richey.
âI have to say, even though with everything going on, I think itâs awesome. You can still feel like you are a part of it even though the crowd isnât here and everything,â said graduate Warren Williams.

He applied only for the WOPS superintendent job, and was hired by the school board Feb. 1, although his first day in the district was officially Monday, May 3.
“It started with geography, I love this area and this region,” Bearden told The Sentinel. “West Ottawa is the only position I applied for. It encompasses all the things I think are important.

In this sponsored post, “CityNews” speaks with experts in the Queanbeyan region who are passionate about what they do.
QUEANBEYAN, which started as a squattage, held by ex-convict and inn keeper Timothy Beard, pre-1838, is now one of the fastest growing inland cities in NSW, according to the Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council.
It became a township in 1838 when there were about 50 people in the town, and more recently has grown to a population of almost 60,000, according to the 2016 Census.
Its name is the anglicised form of “quinbean” – an Aboriginal word meaning “clear waters”.
Queanbeyan’s economy is based on light construction, manufacturing, retail and agriculture but this continues to grow, with a variety of other businesses settling in the region such as arts organisations.
