Long before Amazon or the ecommerce sites for our favourite local stores provided home delivery or curbside pickup options, there was the Eaton’s catalogue. Orders could be placed from the comfort of your own home, over the telephone or by mailing a letter, and goods would be dispatched to an outlet near you.
The 1976 Eaton’s Spring and Summer catalogue had telephone numbers for “catalogue locations” in Listowel, Mitchell, St. Marys, and Stratford. April 4, 1976, was the last day for placing orders – ending a tradition dating back to the 1880s. The Eaton’s catalogue got its start during the 1883 exhibition in Toronto. Timothy Eaton kept his new store open in the evenings to allow visitors to explore one of “the best sights in the City …The T. Eaton Co’s great cash store, where all goods are marked in plain figures and sold at one price to the rich and poor alike.”
