She will compete in the national Skills Canada virtual competition on May 26. ECS has sent more than one competitor in hairstyling in the past, and has swept the podium in previous years. But Mack opted to send just the one competitor this year, because it was difficult to train for provincials. “The student that went in, we did most of her training in the fall of 2019 … getting ready for the 2020 year, which nobody got to compete in because everybody was sent home in March,” said Mack. When Skills Canada Saskatchewan said they would do a virtual competition this year, ECS was approached to see if they would have someone, and Frederick was selected.

One local student from Vanier Collegiate will be competing in the nationwide Skills Canada Competition, which brings together high school and post-secondary students to test their competence in a variety of skills related to the trades.
Grade 12 student Grace Kiefer recently took part in the Skills Canada Saskatchewan competition, held virtually this year on April 16. She was the only Vanier student able to compete, as the three other students set to take part had their categories cancelled for the year.
Jessie Monz has always had an interest in photography and decide to compete. Samantha Seidle started with the yearbook committee and decided to take her photography to the next level when her sister went to last year’s competition. Vance Hill was convinced to go in grade 9 and has been involved ever since in the industrial arts. Developing the technical skills is just one side of the competition. Competitors had to also manage their time while editing their work, said Monz and Seidle. Competitors also have to deal with deadlines, problem solving, and critical thinking. Hofmann had the pattern for a skirt before the competition but was marked on quality of construction and any creative embellishments that she added. She also got to keep her piece.
