MacRostie Art Center is pleased to announce its August 2021 exhibitions. The MacRostie Gallery will present the 29th Annual Juried Art Exhibition; the Minnesota Gallery will feature new works by Clarence Morgan and Isa Gagarin in “Strata;” and the Emerging Artist Gallery in Old Central School will showcase ceramic works by MAC studio artists. The public is invited to experience the new exhibitions opening August 6 at MacRostie Art Center in downtown Grand Rapids or online at macrostieartcenter.org. The MACâs annual juried exhibition celebrates variety and rewards excellence among Midwest regional artists. The juror, Clarence Morgan, reviewed over 120 submissions to select the 28 works which make up this yearâs exhibition. Awards in the two- and three-dimensional categories will be presented at the opening reception.Â

Imagine this. You’re standing in Cork city’s Elizabeth Fort, one of 15 socially distanced people, right in the midst of Alex Petcu’s percussion sextet Bangers & Crash, buried by the raw power and immediacy of live percussion, that “immersive, visceral feeling of the music up at the fort”.
Or this: “You’re standing underneath the Port of Cork sign, facing out to the water, the quay, the city, headphones on”, listening to sounds, spoken word, electronic beats, opera, teasing out the life of Kate “Birdie” Conway. “You’ll be encouraged to dance, if you want to… or it’s perfectly acceptable to stand there. It’ll be very interactive.”

Despite the constraints of the Covid era, the trio have been getting airplay in the UK and US, and are ploughing ahead with releases of their quirky tunes

While the Covid landscape has presented challenges for many Irish bands, Cork post-punk trio Pretty Happy, have stayed the course. They ve been splitting their lockdown time between Mayfield, Ballyvourney and London, and the release of their January single Salami has received airplay from the likes of RTÉ 2FM, BBC Radio 6, US indie institution KEXP.
