The Kid LAROI, aka Charlton Howard, has achieved major successes since the release of his debut mixtape F CK LOVE in 2020, which saw him winning Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year at this year’s APRA Music Awards.
His rise has been a meteoric one: after relocating to the US, he was mentored by the late rapper Juice WRLD, and worked alongside Miley Cyrus on a remix of his song ‘Without You’, which they performed together on Saturday Night Live.
The 17-year-old now has more than 26 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
The Kid LAROI was raised in the south Sydney suburb of Redfern, growing a strong following after posting his music on Soundcloud and social media.

Mayor Darriea Turley AM admits she doesn’t know much about rap, but she has lauded the achievements of former local Charlton Howard aka ‘The Kid Laroi’.
Last night the rap prodigy took out the Breakthrough Songwriter of The Year award at the APRA Music Awards in Sydney after the success of his of his ‘F CK LOVE’ record.
A descendant of the Kamilaroi people, Howard spent much of his childhood relocating around NSW, and spent four years of his childhood living in Broken Hill with his mother and grandparents, before moving home to Waterloo.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander performers have taken out a raft of gongs at this year’s APRA Music Awards, led by Kamilaroi rapper The Kid Laroi winning Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year.
The award continues a wave of both local and international success for The Kid Laroi – real name Charlton Howard – since the release of his debut mixtape, F ck Love.
The Kid Laroi grew up in Waterloo, Sydney and became the youngest ever Australian solo artist to take the ARIA’s number one spot at 17 years old, as well the second ever Aboriginal solo to reach the top of the chart, after the late, great Yolŋu performer Gurrumul.
