USG confirms Chief Justice of the Judicial Council, passes four resolutions

March 17, 2021 in News Tuesday’s Undergraduate Student Government meeting was the second to last gathering before the new Senate transitions under the Areias-Warren administration. (Michael Melinger | Daily Trojan) Undergraduate Student Government Senators confirmed Benjamin Morain as the Chief Justice of the Judicial Council during Tuesday’s meeting. Senators also passed four resolutions ranging from providing food accessibility to supporting Burmese students Morain, a junior majoring in political science, was initially nominated by President Gabe Savage to fill the role on the Judicial Council. While the meeting held an opportunity to debate Morain’s appointment, Senators raised no objections and confirmed Morain unanimously with nine votes.

USG attempts to move forward in aftermath of racial reckoning

Several posts on the account claimed that former Undergraduate Student Government President Truman Fritz engaged in racial misconduct.  In response to these allegations, Abeer Tijani, a senior majoring in global health, called for Fritz’s immediate resignation due to his racially insensitive behavior. Despite having reached out to Fritz and Ritch on multiple occasions, Tijani was left ignored by the two. She then helped lead efforts on her Instagram account to impeach Fritz and Vice President Rose Ritch due to her complicity. 

USG finalizes spring budget, discusses mental health initiative

February 11, 2021 in News, Sticky The Spring 2021 Undergraduate Student Government budget is $642,610, and is divided among all of the assemblies and committees under USG. (Nayeon Ryu | Daily Trojan) The Spring 2021 Undergraduate Student Government budget of $642,610 was approved by a near majority vote during Tuesday’s Senate meeting, making adjustments to the Concerts Committee fund and confirming the Accessibility Fund from last week. Senators also discussed ways to support students affected by the military coup in Myanmar. Three thousand dollars of the Concerts Committee funds were transferred to the Performing Arts Committee for a sponsorship event, with the latter committee originally receiving no additional funds for the Spring 2021 semester. With the largest allocation of funds, the Concerts Committee is now set to receive $172,000.
