Sam Haiby tepped into the spotlight last season in her third year in the Nebraska women’s basketball program. The 5-9 guard from Moorhead, Minnesota, captured second-team All-Big Ten honors by averaging team highs of 16.8 points, 4.4 assists and 1.2 steals while also ranking third among the Huskers with 6.8 rebounds per game. Haiby’s versatility allowed her to be the only Big Ten player to rank among the top 15 in the conference in scoring (11th), rebounding (15th) and assists (8th).

Nebraska had lost four straight games before a road win vs a ranked Northwestern team earlier this week. The Huskers learned that they can win even when the other team puts a lot of effort into stopping Sam Haiby. In the win vs the Wildcats, Kate Cain came up big (pun intended) as she had a perfect night from the field and free throw line (22 points) and scored the 1000th point in her Husker career.

Senior center Kate Cain currently sits at 998 points in her Husker career. It seems likely that she will join the 1000 point club in this game. She is such a defensive presence that it is sometimes hard to appreciate how much work she has put into her offensive skills. Her free throw shooting is noticeably improved and she has increased her range considerably since her freshman year.
The Husker women are in a tailspin after losing four straight games, two of them to the top offenses in the nation (#1 Maryland and #2 Iowa). Earlier this season, the Huskers had a remarkable run with wins over three ranked/receiving votes teams in four attempts (a two-point loss being the fourth). After that stretch, the Huskers were among teams receiving votes in both polls.
