The Atlantic Philanthropies, created in 1982 by Irish-American businessman Chuck Feeney, is giving €138.4 million [$177 million] to Trinity College Dublin and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) to establish the Global Brain Health Institute (GBHI), a ground-breaking initiative that aims to tackle the looming dementia epidemic and improve health and dementia care worldwide.

New research from Trinity College Dublin suggests that older adults can be more focused, less impeded by anxiety and less mentally restless than younger adults. The team at the Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience (TCIN) (today, Wednesday, 10th February, 2021) show that older adults appear to mitigate the negative aspects of cognitive decline by increasing motivation and adopting more efficient strategies to suspend the wandering mind when focus is required.
The study, published in the journal
Psychology and Aging (American Psychological Association) is the first to adjudicate between competing theories of age-related mind-wandering dominant in the field. It highlights the influential roles of affective and motivational factors in driving age-related differences in unintentional mind-wandering and provide reasons to be less persuaded by previous cognitive resources accounts.
Polish expansion for UK and Ireland-based CRO adds more capability and deepens alignment with academia
A UK and Ireland-based team of scientists researching human neurological and psychiatric health conditions is strengthening links with academia by opening a fourth laboratory in Poland – just months after announcing a further expansion in the UK.
As well as marking a further growth for contract research organisation Transpharmation, the expansion also makes Transpharmation Poland the very first company to co-locate alongside University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn.
The news comes two months after the announcement that Transpharmation is to open an additional laboratory at the science park Discovery Park in Kent, England – adding to its current footprint at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) and The London Bioscience Innovation Centre in London, England, and Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience (TCIN) in Dublin, Ireland.
