There is no escaping the effects. From the opening notes of Edvard Grieg’s tribute to the baroque composer Holberg, we are amazed again at the KSO’s crisp, confident sound. Music is confirmed as the universal language. Following that is a recording of a conversation between conductor Dina Gilbert and guest soloist Marina Thibeault. It’s gentle education and an important addition, as Peteris Vasks’ concerto for viola and string orchestra is comparable to an outward-bound experience enjoyable if you know what you are in for. We discover a young woman who is able to combine meditation and exuberance while excelling on an instrument that can tell deep, dark tales.

Cellist Doug Gorkoff made the connection and Weeds jumped at the chance to perform a concert he had earlier had to cancel. It was to commemorate 100 years since the birth of Charlie Parker, a pioneer of bebop style jazz with its distinctive rhythm and harmony. Parker started using a string orchestra in recording sessions begun 1949. The album became his legacy. In the KSO version, there is an oboe, harp and French horn. The oboe is a good match for the saxophone, as is Marea Chernoff’s style of play. Conductor Dina Gilbert was another good match, earning Weeds’ praise for her great energy.
