It follows a 1999 U.S. Supreme Court ruling, Olmstead vs. L.C., that said unjustified segregation of people with disabilities constitutes discrimination under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Angie Bosch, executive director of Freedom Resource Center for Independent Living, applauded the settlement, saying people with disabilities are happier, healthier and live longer when they can live independently in the community.
“We believe it should be just as easy for people to live at home as it is to get into a nursing home,” Bosch said.
The pre-lawsuit settlement agreement will impact more than 2,500 adults with disabilities by helping them assess their options, decide where they would like to live, and arrange for community-based services.
