Man faces capital murder charge in fatal car jacking after allegedly shooting Burleson officer

Jerry Don Elders, 39, was charged Friday in a Johnson County courtroom.
Investigators believe that on the morning of April 14 the woman got out of her vehicle and was allegedly shot by Elders while attempting to escape, according to Johnson County Sheriff Adam King. She made her own way all the way back to Joshua police but did not survive, King said.

Joshua Lott, the Burleson police officer who was shot three times on Wednesday, was released from the hospital on Thursday evening.
Multiple police agencies lined the parking lot as he exited John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth. A caravan of patrol cars escorted him to his Burleson home.
About 4:15 a.m., Lott made a traffic stop in the 1100 block of Hillside Drive, near Burleson High School.
The stop was made for a defective taillight or brake light, said Burleson Police Chief Billy Cordell.

BURLESON, Texas - A man suspected in the shooting of a North Texas police officer during a traffic stop early Wednesday has been arrested, authorities said.
The three occupants of the vehicle involved also are suspected in a carjacking shortly thereafter in which the woman driver was shot dead, police said.
Jerry Don Elders, 39, is suspected of shooting the police officer three times at about 4:15 a.m. Wednesday in Burleson, Texas, about 13 miles (21 kilometres) south of Fort Worth, Burleson police said on Twitter. The Burleson man already had been wanted on two felony drug offence warrants when the shooting happened, said Burleson Police Chief Billy Cordell.

Jerry Don Elders was arrested Wednesday afternoon and is facing charges in the officer s shooting. Elders, who was expected to appear before a magistrate Thursday morning, is being held on bonds totaling more than $1 million and has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a police officer.
