AMHERST A $2 million capital campaign underway for the construction of a new Newman Catholic Center, likely to open in spring 2022, is already halfway toward its goal due, in large part, to a gift from an alumnus.
George “Trigger” Burke, who is the honorary chairman of the “Miracles Happen… When Heart Speaks to Heart” campaign, recently made a $500,000 contribution, one of the 52 donors who have pledged a combined $1 million toward the project.
As a result of Burke’s gift, the worship space inside the new building, to be constructed at North Pleasant Street and Thatcher Road, will bear his name.

AMHERST Preliminary plans for the new building to house the Newman Catholic Center on the University of Massachusetts campus will be presented to the Planning Board Wednesday.
Vinsu Shah, a representative of CBT Architects of Boston, will discuss designs for the project, which would replace the existing Newman Center at 472 North Pleasant St. that opened in April 1963. In August, the Springfield Catholic Diocese sold the building for $12.5 million to the UMass Building Authority.
We were wondering on this fine Friday. We know we have ours, but what s your favorite little out of the way, hole-in-the-wall spot for tasty grub?
JStew: Oh boy... even though I ve lived here in the Bangor area for the last 8 years, I feel like I still find new places all the time. One favorite of mine and KStew is down in Brooks at Ralph s Cafe. All sorts of homemade breads and pastries. Love it there. I m also a huge fan of Dabesta Pizza in Bangor on Thatcher Road by Beal University. And when I travel to Portland, It s Marcy s Diner all the way. Honestly, going out to eat is one of my favorite things in the world, and have suffered during the pandemic. But we get takeout often, and don t use gift cards, so we re still trying to do our part to keep Maine owned restaurants going. But man, I can t wait to sit indoors again someday, and have someone keep bringing me food til I keel over and pass out!
