An airdrop of relief supplies under code name OP POONAMALAI on June 4, 1987 was executed by India, to break the blockade put in force by the Sri Lankan Army which had ringed Jaffna. From supposed rescuers of Tamils to the sinister epithet “Indian People Killing Force” the label coined by the local Tamils there was a sea change in perception of the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF).
