UPDATE 2-Australia's competition regulator proposes to deny Qantas-Japan Airlines deal

Qantas and JAL the only carriers on Melbourne-Tokyo route Qantas says will respond to regulator’s concerns (Adds Japan Airlines comment) SYDNEY, May 6 (Reuters) - Australia’s competition regulator said on Thursday it proposed to deny authorisation for a joint business agreement between Qantas Airways Ltd and Japan Airlines Co Ltd (JAL) covering flights between Australia, New Zealand and Japan. Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) Chairman Rod Sims said such a deal between two key competitors, which would allow them to coordinate fares and schedules, could be authorised only if the public benefits from cooperation outweighed the harm to competition.

Australian Regulator Eyes Apple, Google Marketplace for Harmful Market Practices

Australian Regulator Eyes Apple, Google Marketplace for Harmful Market Practices An Australian regulator has raised concerns over Google’s Play Store and Apple’s App Store, saying that the tech giants have disadvantaged competing app developers. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) released an interim report that identified several issues raised by app developers about the Google and Apple marketplace duopoly. “Apple and Google’s stores are the gateways between consumers and app developers, and it’s true that they provide considerable benefits to both groups,” ACCC Chair Rod Sims said. “But there are significant issues with how this market is operating.”

Rex Patrick says Google should be designated under media code despite deals

Google has handed millions to News Corp, owned by Rupert Murdoch, 89, (pictured with wife Jerry Hall, 64, in 2019) Treasurer Josh Frydenberg is under pressure to make sure Google doesn t wriggle out of a proposed law regulating big tech by handing over millions to the likes of Rupert Murdoch. The world-first law, which is set to pass Parliament this week, was drawn up to tackle the huge power of Google and Facebook by forcing them to pay media companies for the news content they host and reveal some of their closely-guarded algorithms and data.  But experts say Google is trying to avoid the rules by handing over millions of dollars to a few big companies including Seven, Nine and Rupert Murdoch s News Corp after Mr Frydenberg flagged he may exclude it if deals are made.
