More than three-fourths of a 1,500-acre fire in north Collier County remained active Sunday morning with firefighters from two counties working to further contain flames that destroyed two homes and damaged two others. Sunday afternoon the Florida Forest Service Caloosahatchee Center was reporting the fire remained about 20 percent contained. Melinda Avni, a mitigation specialist for the Florida Forest Service Caloosahatchee Center, said the service s wildland firefighters were building and improving existing containment lines around the fire and providing access for cooperating structure crews.

Working with the Department of Health, fire chiefs and firefighters from Cape Coral Fire, Bayshore Fire and Rescue and Bonita Springs Fire Control and Rescue District, among other departments, have had the opportunity to get the Moderna vaccine if they wish. “I think it’s very exciting and I just hope more people do it,” said Chief Greg DeWitt with Bonita Springs Fire Control and Rescue District. “2020 was bad enough, we don’t want to have 2021 looking the same way.”
