Economist tasks FG on improved infrastructure to boost productive sector

By Ige Adekunle Sango-Ota (Ogun), Feb.19, 2021 An economist, Prof. Evans Osabuohien, has said that the nation’s rising inflation can be easily controlled only if the Federal Government urgently provides adequate infrastructure to the productive sector of the economy. Osabuohien, also the Head of Economics Department, Covenant University, Ota, said this in an interview with newsmen on Friday in Ota, Ogun. The don was speaking against the backdrop of the National Bureau of Statistics’ (NBS) recent statement that the country’s inflation rate increased from 15.75 per cent in December 2020 to 16.47 per cent in January. Osabuohien appealed to the Federal Government to redouble its efforts at providing adequate infrastructure such as stable power supply, good road networks and security to the productive sector of the economy to mitigate frequent rise in inflation.

The twenty-seventh report of the Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team states that the TTP was reported to have overseen a reunification of splinter groups in Afghanistan. According to the document, this reunion of terror groups was moderated by al Qaeda and was expected to increase the threat to Afghanistan, Pakistan and the region. Commenting on the report, Major General (retd) Inamul Haq said controlled terrorism has always been used by the government in Kabul to malign Islamabad’s position and to influence Washington DC’s plan to withdraw its forces from Afghanistan. The TTP, he said, has shifted its base to Afghan territory.

Osabuhien, former Head of Economics Department, Covenant University, Ota, gave the advice in an interview with newsmen on Wednesday in Ota, Ogun. He was reacting to Mr Muhammad Nami, Chairman of Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRs) claim that the nation lost over N5.4 trillion to multinationals through tax evasion. NAN reports that Nami had, on Monday in Abuja, said the country lost over N5.4 trillion through taxes evasion to multinationals between 2007 and 2017.
