Survivors of intimate partner and sexual violence experience housing insecurity at disproportionate rates and as a direct result of the violence theyâve endured. The pandemic has made it unimaginably worse.

Angela estimated that she and her four children have moved 10 times since they fled her abusive husband in 2017. She doesnât always have the money to move, but when he finds out where they live, she has no choice. One time when he found Angela, he showed up with a handgun, threatened to kill her and the children, and forced her back to their old home.Â

Lane County Survivor Project is recruiting any resident over 18 who has attempted suicide to share their story. The project is supported by an artist who will photograph and audio record the most important parts of a survivor s life up to now.

Roger Brubaker is Suicide Prevention Coordinator for Lane County Public Health. He said anyone who has survived a suicide attempt has a lot to teach.
“Who is able to share stories of suicide with the community other than people who have been to those dark places themselves?” Brubaker asks.
The goal of the Survivors Project is to put a face to the statistic and let people who may be thinking about suicide- see that there is hope. The Suicide Prevention Coalition of Lane County and Lane County Public Health are spearheading the outreach effort.

Itâs a 10-point plan aimed at changing the way victims, regardless of race and gender, receive benefits. Itâs an issue that is often not talked about, but is picking up steam in the state legislature.
âI think weâre still really waking up as a society to see and understand the toll it takes on someone after a trauma has occurred,â says Meg Dalabes, Director of Community Education & Development with ACT.
