HAMILTON â Memorial Day weekend marks the traditional kickoff of the summer season.
The 1.6-million-acre Bitterroot National Forest offers recreational opportunities including nearly 250 campsites in 26 campgrounds, hiking on more than 1,800 miles of trails, boating, biking, horseback riding, and more.
Forest officials are asking visitors to observe the following safety tips, along with the status of campgrounds, trails, and roads, into their adventures during the upcoming Memorial Day weekend.
Be prepared for changing weather conditions. Temperatures at night are still cool and isolated showers are in the forecast.

While there are some incredible hotels and lodging facilities in the Tahoe Basin, one great way to experience the area is through camping. Whether it’s tent camping, traveling in an RV or if a rustic cabin is preferred, there are many beautiful options.
Whether you live here year round or come especially to enjoy the outdoors, the following is a list of campsites around the basin.
Some campgrounds have just opened for the season and the rest will be opening soon.
Fire restrictions for Tahoe National Forest and the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will be noted on their respective websites, and those restrictions will likely be ramped up through the summer after a dry winter.
For the 2021 summer season, campgrounds in Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks will require reservations through www.recreation.gov, which can be made up to one month in advance.
The reservation system is intended to ensure proper COVID-19 mitigations and allow campers to plan with more accurate information about campsite availability, according to a press release by the National Park Service.
To cover online processing costs, fees for campgrounds newly added to www.recreation.gov will increase to $22 per night, an average increase of $4 from previous years.
“We know that many people have been coming to these parks for years and years, and look forward to their camping trips all year long, while many others are eagerly awaiting an opportunity to visit and camp for the first time,” says Superintendent Clay Jordan. “Park employees are working diligently to make campgrounds safe for campers and provide the dates that people need to plan their trips.”
