JASPER COUNTY â The Jasper County Board of Commissioners discussed county bridges and roads during its most recent meeting.
County officials were recently notified that it will receive $818,252.25 in funding from the latest round of Community Crossings Grants. As stipulated by the state, that money will be applied to upgrading county asphalt roads only, though the commissioners were hoping to use some of the money to covert the countyâs gravel roads into asphalt.
The county has 350 miles of gravel roads. Officials applied for $1 million in Community Crossings Grants, but got nearly $200,000 less than that.
County officials would still like to slowly convert gravel roads into asphalt in the future.

Since the year 2000, Census estimates show the median household income in the urban core of Pensacola has grown by 85%.
Now, the Pensacola City Council wants to know if that growth has come at the cost of forcing long-term residents out of the area, a concept known as gentrification.
Councilwoman Sherri Myers put forward a proposal at Thursday night s City Council meeting to budget $200,000 for a city study on gentrification in the Urban Core Community Redevelopment Area.
After a long discussion on the issue, the council voted unanimously to have the city s Community Redevelopment Agency fund the study.
Pensacola s Urban Core CRA covers the entire downtown area south of Cervantes Street from 17th Avenue to A Street.
