On Wednesday night, the New York Yankees pulled off a blockbuster trade, grabbing outfielderJoey Gallo from the Texas Rangers in a deal that will also see the Yankees pick up lefty reliever Joely Rodríguezonce it is made official. Heading to Texas are pitcher Glenn Otto and infielders Ezequiel Duran, Trevor Hauver, and Josh Smith. In his seventh season in Texas, Gallo has already set a personal best in WAR at 3.4, thanks to a .223/.379/.490, 25 home run effort coupled with continued Gold Glove-caliber defense in right field.
We’re focusing on the major league part of the trade here; for more information on the players moving to Texas, fellow FanGraphiér Kevin Goldstein has published his analysis.

SAN FRANCISCO Trouble with the curve? For Harrison Bader, that’s seldom been the case as of late.
This season, Bader is hitting .342 against breaking pitches across 38 at-bats entering Tuesday. Given how much Bader has struggled against breaking pitches in his career, the improvement has been a welcome sight. Everybody in this league can hit a fastball,” Bader said. “The separators are stuff off the fastball. So just continuing to be super simple and work on the ones I can handle. It’s been nice for me so far this year.”
Of Bader’s six home runs this season, five have come on breaking balls. That includes his two-run home run last Sunday off Germán Márquez (85.5 mph knuckle-curve) and a grand slam last Friday off Yency Almonte (83.8 mph slider).

Entering the 2021 season, the general expectation was there would be two competitive teams in the NL West, in the Dodgers and Padres. But halfway into the season, there’s a third team in that division that made an early statement and is still the best team in baseball. The Giants are 52-30, with a .634 winning percentage that is just ahead of the Dodgers for best in the Majors.
They’re tied for the MLB lead in home runs and sport the league’s second-lowest overall ERA, so they’re getting it done on both sides of the ball. They have a plus-103 run differential. There’s no question the Giants have been among the best teams we’ve seen so far this season. But with the unexpected nature of this campaign, it’s a fair question to ask whether this can continue for the full 162 games and into October.
