AN Abbeyfeale man who now lives in Killorglin, County Kerry robbed an elderly neighbour in his own home as he was “nodding off” while listening to the Leinster hurling final on the radio, Tralee Circuit Court has heard.
At a sitting of the Circuit Court, 26-year-old Demetrius O’Brien was handed down an 18-month suspended prison sentence after pleading guilty to robbery at the home of a 79-year-old in Killorglin, on November 14 last, contrary to Section 14 of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act.
O’Brien, of 76 Iveragh Park, and formerly of Abbeyfeale, entered the property and took a €20 note belonging to the man.

The Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau seized €4million in cash during search operations in Kerry and Laois
Hoey who worked in construction earned the cash by travelling across Ireland to collect payments from customers of ‘The Family’.
A man charged following the seizure of â¬3.4 million in North Kerry has been sent forward for trial.
Darren Hoey of Oak Drive, Ballacollig, Mountmellick, Co Laois had previously been refused bail, following an earlier appearance in Tralee District Court.
The charges relate to one of the largest cash seizures in the history of the state.
Darren Hoey is charged with engaging in the possession of property that was the proceeds of criminal conduct, namely â¬2,714,785 and £94,149, at Farranstack, Lisselton, on September 30th.
Heâs also charged with the possession of â¬694,845 at Oak Drive, Ballacollig, Mountmellick, Co Laois on September 30th.
Tralee District Court previously heard the bulk of the money was seized from under a bed in a house in Lisselton, while paraphernalia associated with money laundering – a cash counting machine and vacuum bags – were also seized.
The Minister for Justice says sentencing in criminal cases will be heard in Tralee Circuit Court.
This was in response to a question from Sinn Féin TD Pa Daly, who’s condemned a lack of imagination and flexibility on the part of the Courts Service and the Department of Justice in relation to current operations in Tralee Courthouse.
Following the onset of COVID-19, trials and sentencings in Tralee Circuit Court were moved to Limerick, to facilitate social distancing.
The Courts Service says there is not enough capacity in Tralee to accommodate jury trials; the capacity of the circuit court is 19, when a capacity of 25 is required for jury trials.
A CO CORK horse breeder, who dishonestly induced a 95-year-old Kerry man into withdrawing €70,000 of his savings from his bank account, was today given a two-year suspended jail sentence.
Patrick Hurley (73), from Carhoogarriff, Leap, Co Cork, had earlier been found guilty by a jury at Tralee Circuit Court, sitting in Limerick, of two counts of deception, involving sums totaling €70,000 from the victim, Eugene O’Sullivan, from Kenmare.
Mr Hurley was convicted of dishonestly and with the intention of making gain for himself or another, by a deception of falsely stating that monies deposited in Mr O’Sullivan’s bank account were not secure, and did thereby induce the victim to withdraw €20,000 on December 14, 2016, and €50,000 on March 15, 2017.
