My plumber, upon learning what I do for a living, grinned at me and posed a Sphinx-like question. “Do you know what do summer people like to do best when they get to Maine?” I did not. “They like to drive 15 miles an hour on Route 1 with their hazards on and book up every restaurant in the state. It’s a love-hate thing, but God bless ‘em,” he added with a chuckle.

These sweet brunch treats require little planning or effort, and that makes them great choices for treating Mom right on Motherâs Day. Inspired by Polish racuchy, our twist on buckwheat pancakes balances warm spices such as allspice and cinnamon with tart Granny Smith apples and lemon. For an update on a classic scone, we use ginger three ways â powdered, freshly grated, and candied â to make a tender pastry studded with chocolate chunks. Or for an even simpler, more versatile approach, consider our baked sesame-oat crumble, which goes just as well on tangy yogurt as it does on a vanilla ice cream sundae
