SLUG Picnic: youngassNICO

Photo: Kevin Edwards youngassNICO grew up near Baisley Park in South Jamaica, Queens, the home of the artist’s love for music. He started listening to music in ’98 thanks to $5 bootlegged CDs from the Rite Aid parking lot. Nico grew up in the era of Angie Martinez, DJ Kay Slay, Jay Electronica and more. He would walk around the block and immerse himself in the music pouring out of apartments and cars, spreading the word that 50 Cent was making it big. “As much as I like the new shit, I am so knitted in that gritty New York rap where your bars have to mean something,” he says. “I remember freestyling in circles back in the day where if your bars were not correct, you couldn’t hang.”

Papoose ft Jim Jones King Kong, DJ Kay Slay ft Eeeeerybody Rolling 110 Deep & More | Daily Visuals 7 6 21

By O Jul 6, 2021 | 7:00 PM Who says New York’s rap scene isn’t what it used to be? Today we got some ish courtesy of some Big Apple OG’s who’ve been reppin’ since day uno. First up we have some new visuals from Papoose featuring Jim Jones in “King Kong” where the two incorporate all kinds of CGI effects to keep your eye entertained while they fill your ears with hardcore bars. Elsewhere DJ Kay Slay recruits, well, seemingly every rapper in the game for his 40 minute clip to “Rolling 110 Deep” where we get verses from the likes of Conway The Machine, Kool G Rap, AZ, Raekwon, Papoose, Ice-T, Redman, KXNG Crooked, KRS-One – again, every damn rapper in the game. This song was longer than most rappers albums these days. The video was so long there was even a commercial interruption halfway through it. Dios mio.
