TsukuBlog | With All The Attention On Cherry Blossoms and Hanami, HANA-MATSURI, The Japanese Celebration Of Buddha`s Birthday On April 8th, Is Often Overlooked These Days (revisited)

TsukuBlog A Local Perspective on Life in Tsukuba, Ibaraki, Japan. With All The Attention On Cherry Blossoms and Hanami, HANA-MATSURI, The Japanese Celebration Of Buddha`s Birthday On April 8th, Is Often Overlooked These Days (revisited) 8 April, 2021 With cherry blossom revelry down in the valley below, worshippers pour tea (AMACHA) over a TANJO BUTSU – a special Buddha image with one hand pointing up and another one down, used for celebrating April 8th – Buddha`s birthday By Avi Landau Through a break in the cloud-like canopy of cherry blossoms at Ueno park, I spotted it, up above on a hill, at the edge of The Ueno Kiyomizu Temple`s elevated veranda. A small pavilion, bedecked with flowers- and inside a small image of the Buddha. Despite the excited, pulsating throngs of cherry blossom enthusiasts pushing  around me, I stopped for a moment to watch as someone took a dipper and poured a liquid over the little statue`s head. Then, in the middle of HANAMI, I remem

TsukuBlog | The Legacy of the SAKIMORI (防人)-Japan`s Ancient Frontier Guard Conscripts- is their timeless poetry of LONGING- and the colorful SAITOH-SAI Festival ( 祭頭祭 ) at Kashima Grand Shrine on March 9th

TsukuBlog A Local Perspective on Life in Tsukuba, Ibaraki, Japan. The Legacy of the SAKIMORI (防人)-Japan`s Ancient Frontier Guard Conscripts- is their timeless poetry of LONGING- and the colorful SAITOH-SAI Festival ( 祭頭祭 ) at Kashima Grand Shrine on March 9th 8 March, 2021   By Avi Landau   One of the good things about living in the Tsukuba Science City, is that in addition to all the local folk ( JIMOTO NO HITO ), you get to meet the SHINJU-MIN (新住民), the  people who have come from ALL OVER JAPAN ( as well as from all over the world)  to work at or study at the various research facilities and institutions of higher learning located here. Because of this diversity in geographical background , whenever I  make new acquaintance, I always make  sure to ask: SHUSHIN CHI WA DOKO DESU KA? (Where are you originally from?), and since I have been to all of Japan`s 47 prefectures, after hearing the answer, I mention that I have been to THEIRS and usually make so

TsukuBlog | HANABIRAMOCHI ( 花びら餅 )- a Japanese sweet for January ( especially for HATSUGAMA- the First Tea Ceremony of the Year) which has roots in an ancient court ceremony

TsukuBlog A Local Perspective on Life in Tsukuba, Ibaraki, Japan. HANABIRAMOCHI ( 花びら餅 )- a Japanese sweet for January ( especially for HATSUGAMA- the First Tea Ceremony of the Year) which has roots in an ancient court ceremony 14 January, 2021 By Avi Landau Since the Tsukuba Science City lies amidst the centuries old rustic hamlets of rural Ibaraki Prefecture, it is naturally a great place in which to familiarize oneself with the traditional culture and customs of this area. What makes this small city even more interesting, however, is that besides the presence of the families who have lived here for generations, there is a disproportionally large number of NEW RESIDENTS ( shin ju-min, 新住民) who have come from all corners of the Japanese Archipelago, to live and work here, often in connection with the many research facilities and institutions of higher learning for which our city is now famous.

Need to reduce work-related stress? It s a walk in the park

Research from the University of Tsukuba examined the relationship between sense of coherence (a quality indicative of stress-coping ability) and frequency of walking in forests or greenspaces. The aim was to find easy coping devices for workplace stress. Forest/greenspace walking at least once a week was found to correlate with those with a stronger sense of coherence. The findings suggest the benefits of walking in urban greenspaces or in forests to help with stress management.
