CommonWealth Kitchen, a Dorchester-based nonprofit that helps food startups get off the ground, is settling into its new permanent home in the 36,000-square-foot Bornstein and Pearl Food Production Small Business Center.
“Today is an awesome and auspicious day,” said Jen Faigel, executive director and co-founder of CommonWealth Kitchen. “After what has been truly one of the most difficult, grueling and exhausting 18 months of all of our lives, and certainly in my career, I’m thrilled to say we’re home.”

The Dorchester Bay Economic Development Corporation has begun a two-phase rehabilitation of the iconic Pierce Building on Columbia Road, part of the ongoing a plan to revitalize Uphams Corner as an arts and innovation district.
The first phase, including improvements to the first-floor retail space and a small-business loan center for entrepreneurs of color, is slated to be complete before this fall.
“It has long been our goal to restore the Pierce Building so it can serve as a sound and sustainable community resource and an anchor of the Uphams Corner area,” said Perry Newman, CEO of Dorchester Bay EDC.

Developers set sights on August
The Indigo Block, a linchpin re-development project along the Fairmount Line in Uphams Corner, will be completed this summer, according to the Dorchester Bay Economic Development Corporation, which has been leading the effort to revitalize the site for much of the last decade.
Construction on the estimated $50 million project along East Cottage Street began in earnest in December 2019, but was interrupted by the Covid-19 construction moratorium. Work resumed last May and it’s estimated it will be completed this August.
The project includes a mix of 80 residential units – 44 of them designated affordable – along with roughly 20,000 square feet of industrial commercial space. The main building features a connection to the Uphams Corner MBTA train platform to promote the use of public transportation and an accessible playground for wider community use.
