Chris Beard insists that it was the most difficult decision in his life to return to his alma mater at Texas after a successful, five-season run at Big 12 rival Texas Tech that included an overtime loss in the national championship game two years ago.
Beard is back on the Forty Acres in Austin where he was a student assistant for Tom Penders three decades ago. He takes over a well-funded program that hasnât won an NCAA Tournament game since 2014.
âI understand the standards of the University of Texas. I understand where our menâs basketball program is going to be and needs to be and deserves to be,â Beard said Friday. âThose expectations and standards donât scare me. Donât get it twisted, itâs the reason that Iâm here.â

AUSTIN, Texas - Texas snatched Chris Beard away from Big 12 rival Texas Tech to revive a men s basketball program starved for post-season success.
By bolting to Austin, its seems Beard left some rough feelings out on the high plains of the Lone Star State.
âItâs been a whirlwind of a day,â Beard said Thursday in a statement released by Texas. âItâs a difficult and emotional day in a lot of ways as I leave Texas Tech, a place where Iâm very appreciative of not only my five years as a head coach but also my 10 years as an assistant. I owe so much to Texas Tech University.

AUSTIN, Texas â Multiple reports indicate Texas is hiring Texas Tech coach Chris Beard as its new men s head basketball coach.
Beard, 48, will replace Shaka Smart, who resigned to take the vacant Marquette job last week.
Stadium and CBSSports.com both have reported the hiring, which would be the first time Texas has hired a basketball coach from a Big 12 competitor since joining the conference.
