Barry Mason, the songwriter, who has died aged 85, channelled micro-dramas of love and loss in the lyrics to a string of pop hits in the 1960s and 1970s, notably The Last Waltz and Delilah.
With music by his early collaborator Les Reed, The Last Waltz was one of three songs completed on a wet Sunday in 1967 after their golf date was rained off.

At just 23, Jess Smyth a.k.a.
