Although never a posturing guitar hero, Hilton Valentine, who has died aged 77, carved his own niche as a rock’n’roll pioneer with his work with the Animals. A versatile and inventive player, he will always be remembered for the distinctive arpeggio chords he played on the group’s 1964 breakthrough hit The House of the Rising Sun, which topped the British and US charts.
The song, allegedly about a New Orleans brothel, was an old folk ballad of unknown authorship, and among numerous previous recordings of it was Bob Dylan’s version on his 1962 debut album. Valentine maintained that he had simply adapted Dylan’s acoustic guitar chords, in the baleful key of A minor, for the Animals’ electric version. Eternal delinquents the Pretty Things and their magnetic frontman Phil May, who died on May 15 following hip surgery after a cycling accident, were never short on influential admirers. Dylan included them in Tombstone Blues in 1965, while fan David Bowie covered their songs and allegedly listed May as ‘God’ in a sixties address book.
Mackay Festival of Arts. After being forced into radio silence last year, the MECC s 2021 calendar is bursting with awesome acts to keep us entertained. MECC manager Andrew Bobeldyk said he was terribly excited about the line-up at the MECC this year after COVID ruined the 2020 calendar. I m glad borders have been reopening, he said. We re hopeful things will continue to stay open while they work through the pandemic. The team is excited to be back at full swing again.
