Taiwan applauds U.S. Senate s passage of China competition bill

Taipei, June 9 (CNA) Taiwan s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) on Wednesday commended the United States Senate for passing an expansive bill to counter China s growing economic influence.
The U.S. Innovation and Competition Act, which passed the Senate with a 68-32 vote on Tuesday, also demonstrates bipartisan support among American lawmakers for stronger Taiwan-U.S. ties, MOFA said.
Aimed at bolstering the U.S. competitive edge against China, the bill paves the way for an investment of US$250 billion in scientific and technological innovations such as semiconductor manufacturing and advanced wireless technologies.

Ted Cruz (R-Texas) today released the following statement after the Senate Foreign Relations Committee advanced his amendment requiring the Secretary of State to rescind prohibitions that limit our Taiwanese allies from displaying symbols of their sovereignty, such as the Taiwanese flag or military insignia, when they conduct business with the United States. This amendment incorporates language from Sen. Cruz s Taiwan Symbols of Sovereignty (Taiwan SOS) Act and his Reassurance for Official Contacts (Taiwan ROC) Act.
The United States Has Repeatedly Impinged On China s Vital Interests In the event of an all-out confrontation between China and the United States, the United States would find itself at a great strategic disadvantage. It will be bound to pay a high economic, political, and security cost which could lead to a complete breakdown of the hegemony of the United States in the world.
