Matson Strong bill included in public safety budget agreement

Legislation to strengthen penalties for assaulting a police officer with a dangerous weapon, authored by a pair of local legislators and named for a Waseca police officer critically wounded in the line of duty, is included in the Legislature’s comprehensive judiciary and public safety budget agreement. The Matson Strong bill — inspired by and named after Waseca Officer Arik Matson who was shot while responding to a report of a suspicious person call in January 2020 — will increase penalties for those convicted of first-degree assault with a dangerous weapon against a police officer, judge, prosecutor or correctional officer, upping the minimum sentence from 20 years to 25 years in prison.

Cheeky Bamford finish helps Leeds see off Southampton at St Mary s

Date published: Tuesday 18th May 2021 8:01 - Neil Foster Patrick Bamford’s assured second-half finish coupled with Tyler Roberts’ injury-time strike gave Leeds all three points with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Southampton at St Mary’s. England hopeful Bamford faced up to Saints keeper Alex McCarthy before placing the ball between his legs. Roberts added the gloss in second-half injury time to cap an excellent night for the Elland Road outfit. It was maybe a bit harsh on the home side who huffed and puffed but Leeds quality in the final third told in the end. Southampton made three changes from the side that beat Fulham at the weekend. Takumi Minamino, Nathan Redmond and Danny Ings were benched, with Nathan Tella, Theo Walcott and Moussa Djenepo given the nod.
