This week in coronavirus: Vaccinations begin and Christmas looms large

Nashville Tennessean There is a lot to say this week, and for the first time in a long time, some of it is actually good. Major Tennessee hospitals began the first of thousands of vaccinations of frontline health care workers last week, beginning to build the state’s newest defense to the raging pandemic. The state received between 56,000 and 67,000 doses of Pfizer’s two-dose vaccine on Thursday. More vaccine is expected as early as Monday. State officials said they expect to receive 115,000 doses of another vaccine made by Moderna, which will be used at smaller hospitals that did not receive Pfizer vaccine and county health agencies that will coordinate injections with first responders.

Nashville hospitals begin thousands of COVID-19 vaccinations

Nashville Tennessean For ten months, Tesha Akins scoured the halls of Vanderbilt’s COVID-19 unit, cleaning between the illness and the death, spreading hope to patients isolated from their loved ones. She has been there when some went home. She has been there when some died. Through it all, Akins has known that she too is at risk. It would be no surprise if the virus jumped from a patient to her, as it has to so many frontline healthcare workers combating the pandemic. But when Akins arrives at work next week, she will be safer. Not immune, but resistant.
