Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot wants answers to how the state labor department spent COVID-19 relief aid.The comptroller assembled a workgroup to conduct a full inspection and review of how pandemic funds have been used. The workgroup on Thursday met with the deputy secretary of the Maryland Department of Labor to examine COVID-19 spending and fraud, but most of their questions remained unanswered. We are going to pursue this because we ve got to know what the reality is, Franchot said. It can t be some kind of press release that says, We ve done a great job. Members of the workgroup asked pointed questions, but Deputy Labor Secretary David McGlone did not come prepared with answers. How much money was actually paid out to fraudsters? Franchot said.McGlone pledged to look into it.
