Fifty years ago, jackpot fever swept the country as thousands of punters thronged race courses throughout the country in their search for the mythical pot of gold.
The vision of Bay of Plenty Racing Club President Mr WS Holland and live wire club administrator Ian McEwan, which kicked off with a modest pool of just $733 on the 22nd March 1969, gripped the country until the Government changed the rules around five years later.
The old sweepstake betting which was in vogue before the turn of the (twentieth) century, had never been abolished, so jackpot betting was legal as long as the entire pool was redistributed to the investors.

BARCELONA, Spain A fire raged through an abandoned building occupied by squatters in Badalona in northeastern Spain late Wednesday, injuring at least 17 people, including two in critical condition, authorities said.
Firefighters said they rescued around 30 people from windows as the building burned.
Fire Chief David Borrell added that firefighters did not have time to confirm that the building was empty before the roof collapsed, making it impossible to continue the search because the fire continued. Officials predicted it would take several more hours to control the blaze, which engulfed the building.

At least three people are dead and 19 were injured in a fire that broke out Wednesday evening inside an industrial warehouse in the northeastern Spanish city of Badalona, where firefighters continue to look for victims inside a building that has partially collapsed. The warehouse was home to squatters, most of whom were migrants from sub-Saharan Africa. Three people are reported to be in critical condition and four more in serious condition according to medical emergency services, the news agency EFE reported.
The Catalan chief of internal affairs, Miquel SÃ mper, said on Thursday that the fire brigade is dealing with the added difficulties of not knowing how many people might still be inside, and the risk of the entire structure crashing down. There have already been four partial collapses inside the warehouse, one of them just five minutes after the firefighters went in, âposing a risk to their lives.â
