Pittsfield man pleads not guilty to federal child porn charges

SPRINGFIELD A Pittsfield man on Wednesday denied federal child pornography charges that could net a 20-year prison sentence.
Benjamin Shacar, 34, pleaded not guilty to 10 counts of receipt of child pornography and one count of possession of child porn during an arraignment in U.S. District Court.
A father of three and former grocery store manager, Shacar was arrested in March after federal agents raided his home and recovered explicit images of children on his electronic devices, according to court records.
Shacar was initially detained while awaiting trial, but later freed over COVID-19 concerns, in part.
PITTSFIELD â A Pittsfield man admitted to investigators who executed a search warrant at his Maple Street home last week that he downloaded and viewed child pornography, according to federal authorities.
Benjamin Shacar, 34, of 18 Maple St., was ordered released from the Hampden County Correctional Center in Ludlow on Wednesday to await trial at his relativesâ residence under a number of conditions.
Investigators said Shacar was using Tor software â itâs a network that anonymizes the IP address of users â to access âchild sexual abuse and exploitation material,â according to an affidavit filed by Daniel Yon, a special agent with Homeland Security Investigations. The criminal complaint was made public via the online federal court records portal Tuesday.
