The Jack Bishop Boxing Academy has been fighting for survival during the covid pandemic. Like many businesses in the fitness industry, it was forced to close in line with Government regulations through lockdown. Owner Billy Bessey said: “Boxing clubs have really taken a pounding and we need lads and ladies back in gyms.” Once a fighter himself, he has praised the sport as good for getting youngsters off the street, its mental health benefits and for helping people lose “lockdown weight”. He registered the gym, on Captains Place, as an amateur boxing club just before lockdown, meaning it is now recognised by the Amateur Boxing Association of England, the governing body of amateur boxing clubs across the country.
