Outside of the city, the Delta County Planning Commission is drafting a solar ordinance. It is seeking input from the public. The prdinance would impact 10 townships in Delta County.
ESCANABA The Delta County Planning Commission (DPC) is undertaking the development of a Delta County-wide solar ordinance and is requesting the public’s participation. The DPC would like community members, developers, and other interested parties to participate in this effort. This ordinance will address residential, commercial,and industrial solar installations. In order to develop a solar ordinance that adequately reflects the concerns of county residents, the DPC wants input.

At February’s Cornell Township Board meeting, Bob Barron (Escanaba Township landowner) notified Cornell Township that he wishes to have his property annexed into Cornell so that he can install an industrial solar farm. If you’ve been following the news, you know Barron has been trying to build an industrial solar farm in Escanaba Township for several years. Having been unsuccessful thus far, Barron now wishes to become part of Cornell Township.
Barron’s proposal to install solar panels over 800 acres has torn Escanaba Township apart, much in the same manner the windmills have done to Garden. Many families and neighbors are no longer speaking to one another. Will Cornell be the next township that will be torn apart? I understand landowners in Baldwin and Maple Ridge have been approached by industrial solar firms.

ESCANABA The Escanaba Planning Commission was the major topic of discussion at Thursday night’s regular city council meeting, which was held virtually.
In addition to a presentation on the commission’s actions over the past year by Planning Commission Chair James Hellerman, the council introduced two potential ordinances put forward by the commission. Both ordinances will be readdressed at the March 18 city council meeting, at which time the public will be able to comment during public hearings and the council will vote whether or not to adopt the ordinances as presented.
The first ordinance offers a compromise for a long-standing dispute between the council and the commission over the role of public hearings for developments that would be permitted by right under the city’s zoning ordinance. By law, the planning commission cannot deny a use that is permitted under the zoning ordinance, but the commission has historically held public hearings as a way
